Questions About Jolie Paint
Apply Jolie Paint to clean, dry surfaces such as wood, metal, brick, stone, and previously painted furniture, cabinetry, walls and floors.
Jolie Paint and Finishing Waxes are considered food and baby safe after they have had 14 days to cure. In other words, they are safe to use on baby furniture.
Jolie Paint can be used for exterior projects but should not be sealed with Finishing Wax or other topcoats. It is important to allow moisture to pass through the paint and allow it to naturally weather over time when outdoors.
Teak or eucalyptus wood, shiny porcelain tile, powder coated metals, thermofoil cabinetry and engineered wood finishes may not accept Jolie Paint.
We do not recommend painting kitchen countertops because a painted and sealed surface may be porous enough to harbor harmful bacteria found in some foods.
When in doubt or for large projects, always do a test area first!
Clean your surface with a biodegradable cleaner, rinse and allow it to thoroughly dry.
At this point you are usually ready to start painting. However, there are some exceptions! A quick sand with some medium grit sandpaper will help the paint to adhere over very shiny and/or non-porous surfaces such as melamine and laminate. In these cases, apply a thin coat of Jolie Paint after sanding and allow it dry for 48 hours to give the paint time to begin the curing process and promote adhesion.
Jolie Paint is a water-based paint, which means that tannins and stains can “bleed” into the paint as it dries and create unsightly stains. This is most noticeable on open-grained woods such as oak and mahogany. If you see these discolorations, simply wipe on a coat of fresh shellac (available at most home stores) to block the stains. Allow the shellac to dry, and then paint over it. We don’t advise sanding mahogany pieces prior to painting as this will allow the stain to more easily leach into the paint.
Jolie Paint will cover approximately 150 square feet, depending on the color. The whites, reds and yellows may require additional coats to cover.
Jolie Paint should always be shaken and thoroughly stirred prior to use.
Pour your paint into a separate container while working and clean the rim of your paint can as soon as possible. This will make it easier to properly close the can when you are done.
Do not add water directly to the can as it can contaminate the paint.
Paint should be applied in ambient temperatures, between 55-85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Allow adequate drying time between coats. The paint is dry when it no longer feels cool to the touch.
Put the lid back on your paint as soon as possible. Cover the lid with plastic cling wrap to help ensure an air-tight seal. Avoid hammering on the lid as this will damage the rim of the can, allowing air to enter the can and eventually drying out the paint.
Store your cans in a cool dry area. Humidity and moisture can cause cans to rust.
Jolie Paint does not contain anti-freezing agents. To prevent freezing, store your paint in a temperature controlled environment to prevent freezing.
Questions About Jolie Finishing Wax
Jolie Finishing Wax in Clear is a non-toxic wax that is used to seal and protect surfaces that have been painted with Jolie Paint. Jolie Finishing Wax is for interior use only.
Apply Jolie Finishing Wax to your surface in workable sections with a Jolie Wax Brush and immediately wipe off the excess with a lint-free cloth. For additional protection, apply a second coat of FInishing Wax in the same manner the next day.
Allow the wax to dry for at least 2 hours before buffing with a soft cloth or buffing brush to build up some shine.
Do not apply other topcoats over Jolie Finishing Wax as they will not adhere. Jolie Paint, however, can be applied directly over Jolie Finishing Wax when it comes time to repaint or update the look of your piece!
Colored Jolie Finishing Waxes can be used to bring out the texture in the finish and highlight details and molding.
Brown and Black Finishing Waxes work best when applied over a coat of Clear Finishing Wax. They are highly pigmented and can stain the paint if applied directly to it. On lighter colored paints and particularly for an all-over application, mix some Clear Finishing Wax into the colored Finishing Wax to dilute the pigments and gain more control.
White Finishing Wax contains less pigment so it will be most visible if applied directly to your painted surface. You do not need to apply Clear Finishing Wax as a base first.
Questions About Jolie Floor Varnish
Jolie Floor Varnish is a clear, water-based topcoat used to seal and protect floors and other surfaces that have been painted with Jolie Paint. It has a satin sheen and is designed to be used on those areas that need hard-wearing protection. Jolie Floor Varnish is for interior use only and is not for areas with high water use such as bathrooms.
One liter of Jolie Floor Varnish will cover approximately 100-125 square feet. It should be thoroughly stirred before and during use. If more than one liter is required for a project, stir all the cans and mix them together in another container before use to ensure an even sheen.
Jolie Floor Varnish can be applied with a brush or a 3/8″ nap roller. It should be applied in thin coats. For best results, apply a first coat that has been thinned with approximately 10-20% water in one direction and allow it to dry for at least 2 hours before applying a full-strength second coat in the opposite direction. Allow the final coat to dry overnight before walking or moving furniture onto it.
If painting over a wood floor or furniture, ALWAYS do some test spots with Jolie Paint and Jolie Floor Varnish on the most worn areas before painting. Jolie Varnish is a strong penetrating varnish which can pull stains and tannins out of the wood and through the paint. If you see this happening with the test spots, apply one or two thin coats or of fresh, clear shellac over the entire floor or piece before painting.
